Extensive laboratory tests have been conducted under six series of experiments to study the effects of two species of varying density from strength groups, thickness of constituent members, inclination of loading to the direction of grain of timber and face veneer orientation of plywood, preboring plywood, etc. Analysis of results done at different levels of derivations have revealed a definite trend in applications as to the preference of a particular plywood thickness, timber thickness and strength loss on preboring plywood but no generalized conclusion have been drawn. Bearing strength of wire nails presented for different types of joints may be safely used as designfunctions in plywood-to-wood composite structures.

Nail is an economical and simple jointing device for wood in timber structure such as roof trusses, columns etc. The lateral bearing strength of 3.55 mm dia (9 SWG) nails in double shear in Terminalia alata (Sain) now redetermined through laboratory tests for parallel and perpendicular to grain loadings has heen reported in this paper based on the requirements of Indian Standard. Results of tests conducted on structural joints made from Populus deltoides in three experimental series using diamond pointed common wire nails under variables of shear planes, inclination of grains to loading and the diameter are given in this paper. Safe loads for perpendicular to grain joints have generally been found lesser than those obtained for the joints loaded parallel to grain. Statistical analysis has shown that Elastic limit loads in respect of all the treatments do not differ significantly but displacement at this level indicates a trend that stiffness decreases with the increasing degree of inclination of grain to loading in the joints. The paper also includes safe working loads per nail, based on the confidential limits for use in design of permanent timber structures and the possible relationship between double and multiple shear strength of nails.- Shear Strength of Glued Joints with some Indian Timbers

Mechanical fastening devices have definite limits imposed by their sizes, design and economy in timber construction. Glued timber structures offer higher efficiency, wider choice with freedom of shape to the architects. Long-term economy in the utilization of small dimensioned stocks of timber is an added advantage. As pre-requisite, to the design of glued timber structures, it is essential to establish data on the behaviour of common glues i.e. Urea formaldehyde and Phenol formaldehyde resins, strength of glue line involved with representative species both hard and soft-woods. Studies on block shear tests for dry and boiled conditions on lapped specimens have been conducted selecting 30 species of timbers belonging to three standard groups to evaluate the necessary parameters. Scientific studies on nailed joints have opened up new vistas for the wise and economic use of shorter lengths of planks/scantlings of secondary species in timber structures. Common Wire Nails have been found to be one of the effective fasteners in any structural/joinery work. Determination of nail strength is a pre-requisite for systematic design and construction of nail-jointed timber units. Neem, being a plantation grown timber should gain momentum in utilization to prOvide timber for shelters in rural and semi-urban areas, food and fodder to the needy. Lateral nail strength values of 3.55 mm and 5 mm dia nails for this timber have been reported in this paper for double shear joints. Techniques of nail-jointed timber structures are now well-known for their role In promoting the utilization of short length small dimensioned stocks of timbers, simplicity of fabrication and economy in construction costs. In the present work on nailed joints an attempt bas been made to detrmine the relationship through actual laboratory tests, between strength of 5 mm dia 150 mm long common wire nails under fOllr different condition, of member thicknesses (double shear and quadruple shear joints) in Padauk (Pterocarpus dalbergioides) and two types of araln loadings. The data obtained may be applied in design problems of nail-jointed units for determining multiple shear strength of nails when their double sbear strengtb is known and vice versa for temporary and permanent type of constructions.- A Note on the Lateral Strength of 5 mm Dia (6 SWG) Common Wire Nails in Diffprent Species for Design of Timber Structures
